One Response to Q&A: What do you call the crank that you turn to release your boat/jet ski in the water?

  1. Brains says:

Your trailer probably has a Winch on the front to allow you to launch and recover the jet ski from the water. It may look like this : http://www.grizzlyjig.com/assets/images/1200_lb_trailer_winch.jpg

These types of winch don’t usually come with rope, they’re more commonly supplied with a flat webbing strap, which winds better onto the drum. At the end it’s common for the webbing strap to pass through a hook which fastens onto the eye on the front of your jetski.

If this doesn’t sound or look like the arrangement you currently have on your jetski trailer, I would ask for advice from somebody you trust or from a watersports store you trust.

I recommend checking your winch regularly to ensure the webbing strap isn’t rubbing or worn anywhere.

When we launch and recover our RIB’s we always tie a second line from the boat to the trailer before pulling the boat out of the water, just in case the winch fails.

Once your boat is securely on the trailer you should check the strap is folded neatly on the winch drum, if it’s all messy then over time it will wear quicker.

We usually unwind the strap if it’s messy (making sure the boat is still secure on the trailer) and rewind it back on in a tidy fashion.
