Perhaps this is a local problem, as I’ve heard nothing about it on national news such as CNN. The amoeba cannot enter through your skin, so in order to become infected with them you have to swallow water. Most sickness due to amoebas is amoebic dysentery….”the runs”….diarrhea, …you know. Unless you are very young, very old, or in very poor health, this shouldn’t pose much of a real threat to your health. A doctor can give you a medication prophalactically to prevent illness from amoebas, if you are very concerned with it, but chances are you will be just fine without such measures. If you are still concerned, contact your state Health Department and ask about the amoebic infestation in the particular lake you will be in. If you need to worry, they’ll let you know.
