i always HATE questions like this, ones where you CANT answer with what the asker wants to hear.
what you think you want is not what is BEST for the use you want out of it.
the best wakeboarding boat (the hull itself) is an inboard powered and driven, v drive setup, with ballast tanks to make extra BIG wake.
the new ones on the market today tend to have v8s in them with 300+ horsepower. sanger, suCKpreme, mastercraft, centurion, all pretty much the same. 23′ with the V drive seems to be the popular thing right now.
10 or 20 years ago, some of those same brands made v6 powered ones, usually the 4.3 gm v6 block, and that was putting out about 200 hp or less. since those boats are usually shorter and LIGHTER, they get just as much out of the smaller and less powerful motor while burning less gas.
however, fiberglass hull, wood is your structual strength, wood and moisture plus about 30 years equals rotted wood with no strength left (take a look at an OLD wood fence and you’ll see what i’m saying).
150 hp, or less, only leaves two good options.
1. outboards. outboard powered boats tend to be EXCELLENT fishing boats, and very poor ski boats.
2. sterndrive, with the 3.0 liter 4 cylinder, which makes about 140 or 160 hp, depending on the year. bayliner used to combine that engine with a ski tower in the 175 bowrider model. very much ENTRY level boat, but reliable if well maintained.
when you start talking sterndrives (AKA inboard/outboard), you pretty much lose all chance of ballast tanks and that BIG wake though.
for a dedivated ski and wakeboard boat, a sanger v220 or v230 model, with rear ballast tanks and a ski tower all factory installed, is your best bet for an excellent ski and wakeboarding boat with HIGH quality and relaibilty.
